You're heart is broken when you found out that your IVF cycle is unsuccessful. You might wonder, what's next after an IVF failure?
The process you went through in IVF treatment is draining and it is very demoralizing and frustrating when you find out that it had not been successful. It is normal to grieve after an IVF failure but instead of dwelling on the thought for too long, try to be realistic and look into the problem and make the best decision possible to beat infertility. Whatever you think is appropriate, take action and don't give up.
Until now, it is not clear why IVF failure happens. Basically, this refers to implantation failure even if the infertile couple was able to produce viable embryos and receptive uterus to establish pregnancy. This adds to the frustration patients usually feel because the doctors cannot explain why it happened. If you are thinking of going through another IVF cycle, it will be helpful if you consider some precautionary measures you must do after the embryo transfer.
Precautionary Measures after IVF
Avoid sexual intercourse
Most fertility specialists warn against sexual intercourse at least one week subsequent to an IVF procedure to prevent the occurrence of vaginal infection and to give the ovaries the time to heal after the eggs have been retrieved.
Take progesterone
Progesterone is produced by the body after ovulation. This hormone plays a vital role in keeping the pregnancy. That is why fertility doctors prescribe artificial progesterone either in the form of injection or suppository to help the patient ensure that that body maintains the appropriate progesterone level. Progesterone hormone injections will go on until week 12 of pregnancy. By then, the body will start to produce enough levels of progesterone on its own.
Avoid Heavy Exercise
Most endocrinologists warn against strenuous exercise after IVF procedure. However, light exercises are allowed like walking but not running. Some doctors recommend slight bed rest for one day following the procedure, rising only when going to the bathroom. If you are an athlete, you may proceed with your training routine with reduced training hours and physical activity.
No Heavy Lifting
Fertility doctors forewarn against lifting heavy objects at the course of the two-week waiting period before pregnancy has been established. Moreover, lifting heavy objects can strain the muscles of the abdomen which have been under stress during the procedure.
No Baths
Bathing is not advised during the two-week waiting period because it may bring in foreign substances to the vagina and may cause infection leading to miscarriage. Taking showers is preferred instead of douching.
Options after IVF failure
There are two options available after IVF failure - either you go for another IVF cycle or try an alternative, natural method. Taking another cycle of IVF treatment does not guarantees success, however, you can do something to improve your chances. On the other hand, some find it helpful to use natural remedies after failed IVF. You can try natural remedies in preparation for the next IVF cycle.
