Infertility has several causes which include problems with the woman's ovaries, blocked fallopian tubes, or poor-quality sperm or low sperm count with the male. Problems in conception can be addressed by infertility IVF or in vitro fertilization process. However, there are cases wherein infertility problems are difficult to analyze and are considered unexplained infertility abnormalities.
Three assessments of unexplained infertility
Unexplained infertility, also known as idiopathic infertility, may be present but cannot be traced by current techniques applied during examination. Some possible causes are the inability of the sperm to reach the egg, the inappropriate timing of the release of the egg from the ovary, fertilization is not happening, or the failure of the egg to implant itself to the uterus. The diagnosis of unexplained infertility is observed when there is normality to the results of the three assessments done during evaluations. The three assessments conducted are confirmation of ovulation by history and lab tests, assessing the uterus and fallopian tubes with the use of x-ray known as Hysterosalpingogram (HSG) and semen analysis. There are about 15% of infertile patients that are diagnosed with unexplained infertility. All of them have undergone the evaluation of the three assessments which were found normal but are still unable to conceive. The problem, thus, may be due to the ineffective procedures in conceiving.
When there are many attempts to conceive, the inefficiency or ineffectiveness of procedures can be overcome and most of the patients with unexplained infertility eventually get pregnant. But the time it will take for them to conceive is about six or seven years.
Treatment of Unexplained Infertility
The length of time of infertility is significant. If infertility has been going on for some time, the couple will have lesser chance to conceive. There is only less than 10% chance to get pregnant for a couple with unexplained infertility if they have been trying for more than 5 years to conceive on their own. The percentage of chance declines each year for a woman over 31 years of age.
Continuous timed coitus for a period of time can be a treatment for early unexplained infertility. Other possible treatment is Clomid with intrauterine insemination (IUI) or injectable FSH medications with IUI. If these treatments do not succeed, infertility IVF is the best option for unexplained infertility.
Infertility IVF as the choice of treatment
In unexplained infertility or any other infertility problems, infertility IVF is considered the best treatment among all the various types of fertility procedures. It provides patients with higher chances of successful pregnancy. Likewise, infertility IVF treatment is favored by many couples since any abnormalities can be traced by the doctors.
Infertility IVF treatments result in a success rate of 50% per cycle based on women with ages 35 and below. The rate of successful pregnancy depends on the age of the woman. When there is increase in the age of the woman, the percentage of success rate decreases.
Each unexplained infertility problem is a unique case. If the right cause is found out, the unexplained infertility can be clarified and addressed accordingly during the infertility IVF.
